I have a requirement to retrieve records from a database and create a pivot table from the data. The pivot table has to be created dynamically as different fields can be chosen for rows and columns. The last post I could find on this (from 2006) indicated pivot tables could not be created dynamically. Is this still the case?

Sadly yes, and pivot tables aren't in our middle term plans either. They are very complex things with many undocumented fields that would require a lot of reverse engineering (at least in xls, xlsx is simpler and more documented), and they aren't such an asked feature to justify all the development effort it would take. There are other things that are simpler and much more requested up in our todo list.
If we were to do it in the future, it would be for xlsx only. But as said, sadly today we can't justify the development effort on them.
